Birthday cancellation - Mei Trade Fail

Birthdays are sometimes celebrated by giving rather than receiving.

After staring at this version of my trade with mangaka7 for about two or three weeks, I have deemed it as not being of excellent quality. Also, her thighs are a bit large (by anime standards. XD)

Therefore, to celebrate my birthday, I have canceled it.

I am starting over with something hopefully better.

I haven't really drawn Anne Quess that often. I also haven't drawn her enough to show what her hair really looks like from the back.

Since I've been involved in some trades and requests lately, and expect more in the future, I figured it would be useful to show what her hair looks like from behind. The same thing can be seen here and here (but they weren't that defined so I decided to make this drawing).

So there... that's what it looks like. It's tied low but she also wears it as a regular ponytail (tied right behind the head) when it's hot.

I drew this a couple of weeks ago. I just got around to uploading it.

I'm not really a huge fan. Generally, their presentation in terms of style, pace and narrative tone isn't something I would say was "spot on" (I mean if I were, for some reason, British all of a sudden). But bits and pieces of the liberties they took in creative license was pretty amusing... even touching.

Now that I've made these renditions based on the designs used by Kozumi Shinozawa, I can't help but picture them a little clearer now when I hear stories of them again.

I'm working on a detailed character trade piece right now. I'll be posting a rough of it in a day or two. Stay tuned!

Colored Marker Franz

I picked up a few new markers the other day. They're really hard to come by around here. The most popular school/office supply stores here don't carry them and I really only know of one art supply store (with only one branch that's really too far away from where I live for me to go there whenever I feel like it) and they happen to be the only ones who sell the stuff. And they're not even Copics. Still good though. I've heard of Letraset before but I've never really seen their markers being sold here.

I'm still not too used to them. I wasn't really expecting to do any colored marker work since they're so damned expensive. Actually, I don't think I'll be doing much more of these.

They are useful for laying out rough shadows for the rough sketches though, before I scan and CG over my stuff.

This particular sketch was fun... and pretty unplanned. It's more like a doodle, really. And I realize that I need a little more discipline with my strokes. I've been spoiled by the ability to erase/press CTRL+Z.

Also, as I've been increasing my drawing and sketching arsenal, I think I'll try out Blogger's new Pages feature that they finally released (and which Wordpress has had for YEARS) and put up a tools-I-use kind of thing.

These are several sketchy things I did the other day. I'm trying to loosen up a bit.
I've been using A3-sized paper for a few months already and this couldn't fit in my scanner so I just took a picture of it. haha

(the drawings marked with R were drawn with reference but not copied closely)

For those who haven't been following my study sketches, I'm doing these as an adaptation of a classical academic tradition of copying master works to learn techniques from them. They are not meant to be expressive or even artistic in their own right... just more exploratory.

I'll credit these eventually. For now, I need to sleep. It's like 3AM here right now.

Lan's been bugging me about drawing something new (as I often nag Lan as well). It was really high time I drew something new.

And he's right. I do fear the drawing hiatus. I've been down that road before and it's horrible. And trying to find the road again is a serious pain in the ass.

I was trying to summon the energy to come up with something and I figured I'd start with something easy: some kinda-re-render drawings. On top of that, I actually resorted to listening to Avril Lavigne (it was the only mp3s I could find on my PC). Man, these lyrics are seriously emo. This must've really screwed some gullible teens.

But I digress. I think I'm still not back in the game yet.

I toned down the golden arm braces and accents to match the color of a PhP5.00 coin. I think it looks nicer.

This is the character who barely gets drawn... more of an added backstory to Franz' life. Faith Sonnet is a cousin of his from his mother's side. After the events of the Ffoejian conflicts, Franz went to live with Faith and her family (his uncle and aunt) for a while before disappearing.

... I think her face looks too manly here.

Serious balance issues here... maybe not so apparent if you just take a glance at her.

This is the lead girl in the current Purelight arc. My original vision of her was supposed to be just... pretty. Pretty (and interesting) enough for Franz to fall in love with her and remember her after ten years of fighting from one edge of the galaxy to another.

I'd like to remind everyone that this is part of my exercise series (my trying to copy or restyle certain artwork that come across. These concepts are not mine but were impressive enough for me to try to study them by copying, just as portrait painters do with their inspirations)

This is, of course, a drawing of everyone's favorite obnoxious ninja, Naruto. My reason: I liked how the lines around his eyes and nose were drawn. It looked like something I could incorporate into my style.

And then some school girl eating an apple, originally drawn by a Japanese artist I found at Tinami some four or so years ago. (I drew her hand much too small here. I wasn't working with a rough skeleton on the early stages. But don't you just love how you can really feel her biting that apple? Well, the original was better, truly. And that was drawn a looooong time ago.)

This is kind of a redraw of one of my old CGs before but... not really.

This is the same Vinson from my other sketches, drawn with an updated design of his combat suit, back in the days when my characters and designs were heavily based on Megaman X designs.

Fortunately, the story doesn't involve Vinson wearing the suit anymore. Sorry, future fans. The story's gotta make SOME sense.

I figured a good exercise would be to try to draw stuff based on other people's drawings... kinda like how painters do studies of the old masters... bend the rules a bit, play with realism or with technique. etc... It probably won't be a creativity-from-scratch exercise... I guess that can be covered by some other drawing exercise or whatever.

From now on, I'm gonna post stuff like this every now and then. Please do visit their dA pages though. That's my step past giving them credit.

Here's one based on one of the bare chested girls on gotgituey's "kinnaree journey". I just shortened her body parts overall... I think it could've used slightly less shortening. Crap.

(I didn't bother to draw the nipples. Can't have people thinking they're actually of some use, you know. I mean.. they may as well be bags of fat if they're not gonna feed any infants.)
