I think there's something about physics that drives people insane. I've already had two crazy Physics teachers in a row. One during my last year of high school, and another one now. Don't get me wrong. I love physics. And it's fun that they're crazy. It's just that... well... they're crazy.
Back in high school, our teacher had a round pet paperweight made of marble which he often used to demonstrate the concept of gravity by throwing it in the air and catching it... and sometimes purposefully letting it fall to the long softwood platform that ran under the length of the white board in our classroom. BANG! Yeah. The loud reunion of free-falling-body and normal-force-giving-plane had enough kick in it to echo across our air conditioned classroom and up our spines. All the while, our teacher had the good old smirk on his face and many a graduating student has learned to both love and hate. Now that I've gained a few more years of age and a few more years of wisdom, Physics professors have apparently not gained a few more years of sanity.
This is Aluminumbob, a small aluminum block that my present teacher uses to demonstrate a whole slew of physics concepts, in combination with his box of "trinkets"(spring balances, rubber bands, strings, hooks and a variety of small balls). From linear motion and vectors to uniform circular motion and elastic potential energy. And the semester is far from over.
I even managed to write down this statement he said one period that was just......... just wrong:
"If we really have gigantic balls, it's really hard to imagine. Maybe you cannot even fathom [...] before we get caught by the magnitude of these balls."

(Did you get the Spongebob reference? Yes, my physics professor actually drew Spongebob's face and clothes on the aluminum block with a black marker just to make sure it's true to his name.)
clearly, you have not yet met Pauline (if i remember her name correctly) - Fr. Dan's beloved globe. he actually introduced her to us in class, and when we asked why he'd named his globe of all things, apologized to her and said he was sorry we were being so mean and that we didn't mean it. O_o and this is father dan, mind you, the Voice of God and brilliant astrophysicist extraordinaire...
ReplyDeleteMaybe Physics just gets a little lonely at times and you can't help but make friends... out of inanimate objects.
